FAQ / BEFORE YOU WRITE

Wedding & event photography / Your questionsYour day,
your questions.

The useful details, in one place.

How do you say 7-77?

Seven seventy-seven. Lucky sevens.

What can I hire Jesse for?

Wedding and event photography and film. I capture what’s naturally happening, without posing or staging the day. We agree on the hours, scope and quote before booking.

What happens if you’re sick?

I’ve never missed a wedding. If I were sick, I’d call Corey and Elena first. I can also turn to Rob Malo Films, my protégé, or Ella Photography, my mentor. I’m from Montréal and have longstanding connections in the wedding industry here. Any backup plan would depend on who’s available.

What are the hourly rates?

$700 CAD per hour for photography. $1,000 CAD per hour for photo and video, with Jesse and a shooting partner: two shooters. The intention is one all-in price. Taxes, editing, delivery and any location-specific costs are confirmed in the quote.

Can I add a Super 8 film?

Yes. Add a Super 8 film for $1,000 on top of your photo/video booking. One cartridge, with shooting, processing, scanning and editing included. Expect about three minutes of recorded footage; the finished edit length varies. Currency and tax treatment are confirmed in your quote.

What will I receive from a shoot?

We agree on the photographs or film, editing, formats and delivery expectations before booking.

Can I see a finished client gallery?

Absolutely. I have many full weddings. Tell me your style, and I’ll show you a wedding I think fits.

Where do you work?

Montreal Island, easily accessible locations are the best fit. Send the location and access details so we can confirm whether it’s a fit.

What should I include in my first email?

The date, location, and a little about what’s happening. If you know which hours or moments you want covered, include those too. A loose plan is enough to start.

What if I’m still figuring out the plan?

Write to me anyway. Tell me what you know and what you’re unsure about. We can talk through photo, photo + video, or adding Super 8 without a booking form.

Does an email reserve a date?

An inquiry starts the conversation. Once we’ve agreed on availability, scope, price and terms, I ask for 50% to book. The remaining 50% is due around the wedding day.

What about weather, cancellations, and usage?

We agree on rescheduling, cancellation, refunds, weather plans and how you can use the finished images or film before booking.

Is this the Hey Lover wedding business?

Hey Lover remains a separate wedding business. 7-77 is Jesse’s separate photo/video practice.

Which email should I use?

Call 438-459-9756 or email info@jessedanielsmith.com, in English or French. The links open your phone or email app.

Can we work together in French?

Yes! I’m learning French and happy to work in French, even though it’s not my native language. Please practise with me! While shooting, I tend to speak less and observe more, letting the moments unfold rather than directing them.

Do we need to arrange dinner for you?

I usually eat as I go rather than sit down for a scheduled dinner. Meal arrangements can be a surprising amount of trouble, and keeping it simple tends to work better for me. We can talk through the plan for your day.

How do we plan the day together?

First, we’ll chat and see if we’re a good fit. As the wedding approaches, we’ll touch base and I’ll sketch out a simple photo plan. I mostly need a start time and a location. Then I follow what you’re doing, whether that’s cutting the cake or moving on to the next part of the day. I don’t typically orchestrate room reveals or staged reaction shots. Your planner’s detailed schedule helps keep everyone coordinated; I don’t need to turn it into a minute-by-minute photo production. I aim to need as little from you as possible, so you can get on with your day.

What if we want hands-on family photos and portraits?

Absolutely. I’m happy to arrange family groups and help with the portraits you want. You can feel awkward in front of a camera and still want the reassurance of a few proper portraits. That’s normal. We focus on combinations that matter to you; Grandma should be comfortable and part of the day, not just the photo list. With camera-shy couples, I prefer to keep moving: walk, chat, offer a little prompt, then move on. No pressure to perfect one pose. If you love posing and you’re great at it, I let you fly and photograph what happens. I’m not against posing; I’m against forcing it. How you feel often shows up in the photograph.

Do guests need to put their cameras away?

Not for me. Phones, iPads, DSLRs: I’m happy for guests to document the day. They generally don’t get in my way, and I work around them. If you, your venue or your officiant want an unplugged ceremony, I’ll respect that.

How did you get into this?

Wedding photography helped support my wandering artistic career. I’ve been following that creative path for about 20 years, including 15 years photographing weddings and events. Music is still part of it.

What music do you use in the films?

I have a collection of instrumental tracks I’ve written, composed or collected over the years. I generally avoid commercial songs because licensing them has been a hassle. Tell me the mood you have in mind, and we can talk about what fits.

Can I watch a full wedding film?

Absolutely. I have many full wedding films you can watch. Write to me, tell me your style, and I’ll show you a film I think fits.

How does payment work?

I ask for 50% to book and the remaining 50% around the day of the wedding.

How long does delivery take?

Usually around a month. It can take longer during a very busy stretch, like when I photographed 15 weddings in one month in 2025.

How do you look after the photographs?

The files are precious cargo. I use external drives, RAID storage and cloud backups as part of a layered approach to keeping them safe. That care, and the systems behind it, are part of what you’re paying for.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS / WHAT COMES BACK

Mostly colour. A little black & white.

My photo delivery: 90% colour and 10% black and whiteA line-drawn pie chart with a small ten-percent wedge for black-and-white photographs.10% black & white90% colour

I deliver about 90% colour photographs and 10% black and white. The mix is part of how I tell the day, rather than a filter applied to everything.

While I’m shooting, I set my viewfinder to black and white. It helps me concentrate on light and composition. I shoot RAW, so the colour information is still there for the finished photographs.

More hours ≠ proportionally more photographs

A short wedding can be packed with moments. A longer day has its own rhythm. Here are examples from my experience, not a formula.

EVEN ONE HOUR250–300photographs can happen
MOST DAYS~600photographs, roughly
9+ HOURS1,000+photographs, often

These are examples, not guaranteed minimums. The people, events and pace shape the final selection. We agree on coverage and delivery before confirming the date.

Infrequently asked questions.

Should we give you a shout-out during the speeches?

No need. I’m happiest blending into the day. And there’s no need to tell guests to put their cameras away on my behalf or compare their photographs to mine. I like the look of a long lens and the natural reactions I get from a little distance, so I can be hard to notice while I’m shooting. Then, during downtime, I’m often quite chatty. I don’t usually come right up for close-ups unless someone asks. If you want a photo, I’m always happy to take one.

Do you have any hobbies?

No. I go really hard at everything I do. Like opening a game studio.
